U-Watch Interview to Mio Kudou [Call Me by No Name]

Translated bits from an interview to Mio Kudou (Call Me by No Name) on U-Watch.

Her first thoughts upon reading the script were that it was going to be a challenge. Mio perceived Megumi as a very delicate person and felt determined to do her very best to face her and portray her properly.

Mio was particularly intrigued by the unfolding of the “name-guessing” mystery and how the characters were slightly different from those in the original novel.

While reading the novel, she was captivated by the story and by the refreshing and unique use of words. It also made her think deeply about how to portray Megumi. She believes all the characters, not only Megumi, are truly fascinating.

Megumi is emotionally delicate and easily swayed, which made it a challenge for Mio to figure out how to portray that balance in a way that could get properly conveyed to the viewers.

Although Megumi is kind and loving, she also possesses the strength to communicate her feelings directly. This aspect wasn’t easy for Mio to embody because she often worries about other people’s opinions and keeps second guessing every thought.

Initially, Mio felt like she had to “flip a switch” to become Megumi. However, as she continued performing alongside Ichika, things gradually changed. “Kotoha’s presence made it possible for me to become Megumi,” she said.

At first, Mio felt quite anxious on set, but as she immersed herself in acting together with Ichika, those feelings ended up fading, and she was able to fully enjoy the experience.

Mio admits that she tends to overthink and often feels uncertain. However, even when she starts off feeling nervous, things usually turn out to be enjoyable once she dives in. That’s how she overcomes her struggles.

This is Mio’s first appearance in a GL story. She felt that there are elements of understanding and empathy that are unique to relationships between women. The images that came to her mind were always vivid and clear.

Mio says that Director Eda approached both her and her character with great care. She’d often give her advices on set, such as “Try doing it like this” or “Follow your heart”.

Mio had never played a character like Megumi before and wasn’t able to grasp her immediately. However, thanks to Ichika staying fully in character as Kotoha, she realized, “I should just spontaneously respond to Kotoha’s actions as she keeps toying with me.”

That’s why, Mio says “There were moments where Ichika really made my heart skip a beat. So my heart would skip beats both as Megumi and as Mio (laughs).”
