TheTV Interview with Mio Kudou and Ichika Osaki [Call Me by No Name]

Translated ecxcerpts from an interview to Mio Kudou and Ichika Osaki on TheTV.

About landing the lead role in Call Me by No Name, Mio said she was thrilled (as becoming a lead was a major goal for her), but also very nervous. Having Ichika by her side was very reassuring.

Ichika was very anxious as well, but mostly really happy. Having been entrusted with the role, she felt like she wanted to deliver the best performance she could.

Reading the novel, Mio thought it would be a challenge to portray it properly, and she wondered if the Megumi she plays could really become the one to save Kotoha.

Ichika appreciated the delicacy of the original story. She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to properly portray Kotoha, but as she read on, she found the novel to be soothing; a piece of work that makes you want to accept yourself more.

Ichika says everyone has parts of themselves they don’t want to show, weaknesses they hide. She herself strives to avoid stepping away from her ideal self, but this story made her feel like it’s okay not to be perfect all the time.

She came to realize that there’s no one as strong as those who can accept their own weaknesses. It was a sort of eye-opening experience for her.

Regarding the fact that Megumi says she likes everything about Kotoha, including her weaknesses, Mio said it’s wonderful for someone to love and embrace another so fully, even the parts they don’t want to show or face. Mio would like to become like that herself.

Mio was told Megumi was supposed to be a sort of source of salvation not just for Kotoha, but for the audience as well. This stuck with her in navigating her performance.

In the beginning, Megumi carries a frail and weak side as well, but she grows stronger as she continues interacting with Kotoha. It was important for Mio to express that growth authentically.

Deep down, Kotoha tries to keep Megumi away, not wanting her to get closer, but at the same time, she maintains a composure that requires a sort of confidence. Ichika worked on creating that balance in her performance.

Mio says she felt really supported on set. Initially, she had a hard time expressing emotions, but when she was about to give up, having Kotoha lead her by the nose helped her bring out her emotions.

In many instances, Megumi finds herself at Kotoha’s mercy, so Mio decided to set aside her thoughts and just let herself react to what was happening in the scenes. This gave her a sense of security.

Ichika said Mio has a big heart and accepts things as they come, which allowed her to experiment with her performance. Usually, she hesitates to try something on set, but on the Call Me by No Name set, she felt no hesitation.

She thinks it’s because Mio’s personality and energy made her feel like she’d embrace it all. So, without fear, Ichika was able to challenge herself in various scenes. She’s very grateful and felt really supported in this way.

Mio loved spending time as Megumi with college mates Sanae and Tabane, while Ichika felt sad she couldn’t spend more time with them. As for Murata…both Mio and Ichika hated him 🤭. “How could he do that to Kotoha?” Mio said.

When asked about something they can’t do without, Ichika mentioned her dog – thinking about giving it a good life motivates her to work hard – while Mio said…rice! She loves rice and eats a lot of it.
