Last week, I was really impressed by how the first episode of Chiisai Koro wa Kami-sama ga Ite handled the lesbian couple in the cast. Since there’s no official translation of the show, I decided to add subtitles to the most relevant scene (for us specifically). Have a look.

So many things are absolutely exceptional about this scene. First of all, the fact that it's a family show on prime time with a lesbian couple in the main cast. Then, the fact that in just a few minutes it managed to touch upon some very familiar issues and struggles without making the atmosphere heavy or hard to digest.
The resistance to really seeing and recognizing lesbian couples in society (and, though this might not be the same in all countries, how gay male couples are often seen more positively, without forgetting the prejudices regarding this specific aspect!), the idea that if someone is a lesbian it must be because she hates men (or has had negative experiences with them), and the belief that if you’re a lesbian, you must like all women.
How common is it to come out to a female friend who then reacts either with a flattered “Wait... does this mean you like me?” or defensively jokes about not getting too close to her?
What’s even better is that the first episode did amazingly well in terms of viewership, and the reaction to Nao and Shiho was super positive. I’m very excited for what’s to come, and I hope you are too!
