TheTV Interview to Yurika Nakamura and Yuuka Sugai [Chaser Game W]

Translated parts from an interview to Yurika and Yukka on TheTV:

When her involvement in the show was decided, Yurika was very happy and even proud. It’s a sort of story completely new for her, that touches very interesting themes, so she immediately started looking forward to the shooting.

When Yuuka first heard she was going to play a double-lead with Yurika, she was both very surprised, happy and honored. At the same time, she was very nervous, especially because it had been almost 7 years since her last experience.

Yurika says Fuyu is her complete opposite personality wise, but being able to play someone completely different is an actor’s privilege after all, so it was fun for her. She hopes it comes through that power harassment is a bad thing though.

While playing Itsuki, Yuuka kept in mind that she would have a kind of loneliness that she wouldn’t show to other people, also considering she was raised by her grandmother, after her mom died.

Having been a group leader for years, Yuuka could relate with grappling with the struggle of clashing opinions, and with Itsuki’s ending up spinning her own wheels and overextending in an attempt to protect her team members.

Yurika believes Itsuki is a strong woman with great leadership skills, and these aspects are definitely part of her charm. If she (Yurika) were to meet her (Itsuki), she would definitely rely on her.

Yuuka sees Fuyu as a hardworker, constantly fighting against something. Forced to survive in a harsh environment, she would definitely like to rest and depend on someone, but she ends up burying those feelings.

At the same time Fuyu’s feelings for Itsuki are very straightforward, and Yuuka finds her fragile side quite charming.

Yurika’s view of Yuuka as a refined and gentle woman hasn’t changed from her first impression, but after spending time together on set, she (Yuuka) let her guard down a bit and they also began fooling around together.

Yuuka says that, unlike Fuyu, Yurika has a super fluffy personality. With her soft aura she’d often bring lots of smiles on set, creating a relaxing atmosphere. When shooting would start early, sometimes she’d fall asleep at the end of takes!

In Yurika’s opinion, Itsuki is a very reliable character, and she thought Yuuka was wonderful in playing her. Looking at Itsuki, Yurika found herself thinking “I see, so this must be why Fuyu fell in love with her”.

Yurika’s acting allowed Yuuka to clearly perceive both Fuyu’s strong desire for revenge and her fragile aspects. She actually found Yurika’s subtle expressions quite moving.

Yurika was not only happy but also proud of finally having the chance of speaking Chinese for a role! She even suggested adding more Chinese lines to the director, who agreed to do it. She’s super thankful for that.

Yuuka thought Yurika speaking Chinese was incredibly cool. She also mentioned that between takes she would talk with the actor playing her husband and she (Yuuka) couldn’t understand a thing!

According to Yurika, she and the husband’s actor were actually talking about the differences between Japan and China’s McDonald’s. It seems like there’s difference in terms of the softness of fries.

The most memorable scene for Yurika is the fight with Itsuki in episode 4 (!!), in which they open about the feelings they had been carrying inside. It’s thanks to that scene that she was able to understand Fuyu’s actions until that point.

For Yuuka, it’s the scenes shot in the cafe. There are multiple scenes in which Itsuki and Fuyu go to the cafè. Various things happen there, including them expressing how they feel, so it overall left quite the mark inside Yuuka.

As for what they paid attention in playing the characters, for Yurika it was crucial to treasure the different sides of Fuyu in representing her. From her attitude at work to her aggressiveness towards Itsuki, and her at-home persona.

For Yuuka it was a challenge very much worth undertaking, that of facing the multi-layered circumstances related to Itsuki’s experiences and emotional burden, and the unavoidable separation with Fuyu in the past.

Chaser Game W is an original story centered around working women, with plenty of aspect that Yurika believes may touch viewers’ hearts, including the beautifully portrayed romance between Itsuki and Fuyu.

Yuuka said she gave her all, her very best, during the shooting. It’s a rich show, that can move to tears and make you smile. She hopes that as many people as possible will watch and enjoy it. And I hope that too.
